FARINA -- Effingham St. Anthony banged out 10 hits and was aided by four South Central errors in a 10-2 softball victory Wednesday.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 2-1 first inning lead. St. Anthony had two big innings, the third with three runs and the sixth with four runs.

Niebrugge continued her long ball hitting with a single, home run and four RBI. Koester added three singles while Woltman and Nuxoll had a double and an RBI each. Schuette chipped in with two singles and two RBI.

South Central was led by Schaal and King with two singles each. The Cougars drop to 0-2 on the season.

Woltman picked up the pitching win on a five-hitter with five walks and seven strikeouts.

At Clay City

Clay City/North Clay (Louisville) jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and went on to edge St. Elmo/Brownstown 8-7 with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

"We started pretty lethargic, but I'll give the girls credit," said SEB Coach Tom Fredrigon. "After being down 6-0 going into the fourth, we could have easily given up but the girls didn't. The offense finally answered the bell in the fourth with four runs including a big two RBI single by Audriana Pruett followed by a booming two RBI double by Tess Philpot.

"Heading into the seventh, the girls, once again, could have just went through the motions but instead they dug in and scored three runs highlighted by a big two-run double by Baylee Scholes. That sent the game into extra innings. Clay City put a couple of hits together to plate the winning run."

Mounds Meridian bounced Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor 14-2 Wednesday.

Meridian stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and had 15 hits in the contest.

Stew-Stras had two hits. Meridian improved to 5-0 on the season.

Shelbyville took the early lead and held off Neoga in a 12-8 victory.

The Rams held an 8-5 lead after three innings. Neoga pulled within 8-7 in the fourth before Shelbyville put the contest away with a four-run fifth.

Neoga had seven hits in the game led by Neece with two singles, C. Blazich with a triple and an RBI. Lee had a single and two RBI and J. Blazich a single and an RBI. The Indians drop to 0-3.

Mattoon edged Newton 2-0 in action Wednesday on the Green Wave's home field.

The two runs came in the first inning and that was the scoring for the rest of the contest. The Green Wave had five hits while Newton had two hits.

Stanley and Hardiek led Newton with a single each. The Eagles drop to 4-2.

These two teams went scoreless through the first three innings before Cumberland broke loose with two runs in the fourth and tacked on two more in the sixth and claimed a 5-0 victory over Arcola.

Carlen picked up the pitching win with five strikeouts.

Cumberland was led by Thornton with a single, home run and an RBI, Casey with two doubles, Carlen with a single, double and Jackson with a double and two RBI. The Pirates are now 6-1.
