Hearts Finish Fifth at Robinson Softball Tournament

ROBINSON -- Effingham High School captured fifth place at the Robinson Softball Tournament Saturday.
The Hearts defeated Red Hill (Bridgeport) 11-2. Hope Collier pitched a one-hitter with two walks and 13 strikeouts. Collier also had a home run and four RBIs while Brittany Beals had a double and an RBI and Madison Weis a double.
Hutsonville/Palestine then defeated the Hearts 6-2. The winners stepped out out to a 4-1 first inning lead and never looked back. Collier had another home run and an RBI while Morgan Wilson had a double and Kaylee Tonn a double.
The Hearts fell to Carbondale 1-0. The lone run came in the third. EHS outhit Carbondale 7-5 but couldn't get across a run. Collier was the losing pitcher on a five-hitter with one walk and three strikeouts.
In the fifth place contest, Effingham blanked Neoga 10-0. The Hearts banged out 17 hits while Collier pitched a no-hitter with two walks and six strikeouts.
Collier hit her third home run during the tournament and had three RBI. Tonn had a double and two RBI while Weis and Madison Crain had an RBI each.
EHS is now 9-10 on the season.
Neoga edged South Central 2-1. The Cougars held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Neoga brought home two runs for the win.
Carbondale JV then downed South Central 15-2. Robinson won over South Central 10-2.
At Decatur
Cumberland competed in the Decatur Showcase and split victories.
The Pirates lost to Williamsville 6-3. Cumberland held a 3-1 lead until the fifth when Williamsville tallied five runs. Lainey Jackson had a double and an RBI while Taylor Layton had a triple and an RBI for Cumberland.
In the second contest, Cumberland downed Monticello 6-3. Monticello pushed ahead 3-1 in the first but Cumberland came right back with five runs and held that for the win. Ashley Greger had a single and triple for the winners while Kaylee Carlen had a home run and three RBI. Breanna Booker had a single and an RBI and Kyle Thorton a double and an RBI.
Cumberland is now 12-8 on the season.
