Effingham St. Anthony dropped a 1-0 soccer match to Mattoon Thursday. The goal scored on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the St. Anthony penalty box.
Mattoon senior Chase Harvey put a solid shot past St. Anthony goalkeeper, Zach Tegeler. The St. Anthony players of the game were Thomas Stephens and Kyle Hartke.
"We're working well together and things are starting to come together just in time," said St. Anthony Coach Scott Demers. "Mattoon had great control and moved the ball well through the midfield area. We had to work hard to get the ball from them. Defense held and offense had a lot of good opportunities but great goalkeeping by the Mattoon keeper, Will Hopkins, who played great."
The Bulldogs are now 9-4-3 on the season.
In junior varsity play, Mattoon also claimed a 1-0 victory. St. Anthony player of the game was Andy Saba. The junior varsity is 1-1-1.
