Carlyle was the champion of the Seventh Annual Effingham St. Anthony Soccer Invitational over the weekend.

Friday's results were: St. Anthony 1, Greenville 1 and Carlyle 4, Altamont 0.

Saturday's results were St. Anthony 1, Altamont 0; Carlyle 1, Salem 0; Greenville 4, Mount Carmel 0; St. Anthony 2, Salem 0; Carlyle 3, Mount Carmel 0; Altamont 2, Greenville 2 and Salem 2, Mount Carmel 1.

Carlyle tallied nine points/seven goals for first place followed by St. Anthony, seven points/four goals; Greenville, five points/seven goals; Salem, three points/two goals; Altamont, one point/two goals and Mount Carmel, 0 points/one goal.

"Despite the heat this weekend, sportsmanship was great, play was fast-paced and competitive and with lots of water and Gatorade, the players only suffered minor bumps and bruises," said St. Anthony Coach Scott Demers. "It was estimated that between the six teams, four referees and four ball-boys, the group consumed an estimated 117 gallons of water or Gatorade over an 11 hour time period.

"The ones that really need to be commended were the referees. With at total of four individuals, they went for 10 hours with only small breaks. Thank you to Gary Goldstein, Derrick Lawless, Evan Bower and Matt Junidi for their tireless dedication.

"Thank you also to Gary Hanner for all of his help. Without him, no one knows the score or how much time is left. Thanks to Kevin Palmer for organizing the teams and the facility and all the parents and student volunteers, Homewood Grill, Pepsi Mid-America, Dairy Queen and Eric and Sara Morales."
