Bulldogs, Indians Open Soccer Regional With Victories

Effingham St. Anthony and Altamont opened play in the Class 1A Altamont Soccer Regional with victories Tuesday.

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond opened up the scoring with a goal at the eight minute mark in the first half over St. Anthony.

But the Bulldogs came back as Harrison Miller, a senior, tied up the score 16 minutes later.

"We had a lot of chances during the game but the first half ended in a tie," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes.

Nine minutes into the second half, Miller scored again to give the Bulldogs the lead. Michael Wright, a junior, scored the Bulldogs' third goal 13 minutes later from a direct kick.

"Alex Koester, a freshman, had a great game," said Coach Reyes.

The Bulldogs, seeded eighth, advance to face No. 2 seeded Teutopolis at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Altamont played host to Robinson and was a 6-1 winner.

The Indians, seeded fifth, advance to meet No. 3 Staunton Co-op at noon Saturday.

The winners of the two Saturday matches will square off for the championship at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 for the regional championship.

 

At Hillsboro

In the Class 1A Hillsboro Regional, Pana Co-op blanked Vandalia by a 9-0 count.

Pana Co-op advances to meet top-seeded Hillsboro Saturday at noon.

The contest following will feature No. 4 Newton against No. 6 Greenville at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The winners advance to the championship match Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m.

 

Class 2A Olney Richland County Regional

This regional opens play Friday as the host squad, seeded 10th, takes on No. 6 Salem.

The winner of that match meets Troy Triad at 4 p.m .Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Effingham, seeded fifth, will take on No. 3 Mascoutah at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23

The winners advance to Saturday, Oct. 26 to meet for the championship at 10 a.m.
