Effingham High School edged Newton by a 2-1 score in soccer competition Tuesday.

"We had a hard-fought game against Newton," said EHS Coach Logan Arney. "It wa a tense game from the opening kick but the team kept their heads and got the win."

Maicol Sefton scored one goal off a well-timed pass from Camilo Aden and scored his second on a free kick from far out.

Goalkeeper Peter Rosen came up with six important saves to hold onto the win.

"Between Rosen's saves and our defensive line stopping attack after atack, we held them scoreless in open play, only allowing the goal on a penalty kick," said  Coach Arney. "The win extends our season record to a historic 8-0."

The Hearts return to action in an Apollo Conference matchup against Charleston Thursday. The junior varsity will open play followed by the varsity contest.
