Effingham High School downed Effingham St. Anthony by a 7-2 count in soccer action Tuesday.

"Our first win of the season and the first win on the new turf field by any EHS team," said EHS Coach Logan Arney. "From the start of the game, we controlled the field. Our team played very well together and worked as a unit. We'll look to continue the strong play this Thursday when we travel to Vandalia. This is the start of good things for EHS soccer."

The Hearts had three goals by freshman Maicol Sefton and three by senior Roy Arellano. Andrew Wagoner, a freshman, added a goal. Xander Marler had a save.

"The score doesn't tell the whole story," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "After a hard fought tournament we had many players injured or sick. Our goalkeeper got injured 10 minutes into the game which made it hard for our team, but we had many players who stepped up.

"Zachary Hurren, a junior, played the second half as a goalkeeper. He had never played goalkeeper before. Manaye Mossman, a sophomore, took the offense on his shoulders and scored two great goals in the first half for us to finish the first half, trailing 3-2.

"We started to get injuries coming. We continue to improve and I'm very proud of the kids, especially the desire to play and improve from Maddox Wiedman, Carson Fallert, Noah Jansen and Sean Silva."

At Charleston

The Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis beat Charleston on the Trojans' home field, 4-1 Tuesday.

Two goals each were scored by Gavin Tegeler and Nolan Runde.

The Shoes are now 4-0-1 on the season and will be back to their home pitch Saturday against Mount Vernon with an 11 a.m. start.
