St. A, Altamont Soccer Seasons End, Newton Headed To Title Match

ALTAMONT -- Effingham St. Anthony and Altamont saw the soccer season come to an end Tuesday while Newton advanced to the regional championship.

Altamont went double overtime before falling to Hillsboro, 2-1 in the Class 1A Altamont Regional.

Noah Klimpel scored Altamont's goal on an assist by Hayden Summer, tying the match at the 35:47 mark.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 in regulation before going into overtime. In the first overtime period, neither team found the net. But, in the second overtime period, Hillsboro's Logan Murray kicked the winning goal at the 5:32 mark.

"We played the full 80 minutes tied and then the two 10 minutes of overtime until they scored," said Altamont Coach Jeff Walton. "We played hard and pushed them in every aspect of the game. Hillsboro is a good team and they are well deserving of the No. 3 seed.

"I am so proud of my players. They gave it all and pushed themselves to the limit. One neveri likes the end of a season to come but everyone can be proud of how they played and went out that way, giving it all and hoping for the best."

Altamont ended the season 10-9-2.

In the St. Anthony contest, the Bulldogs fell to Newton by a 4-0 count.

The Eagles had two goals each by Carder Reich and Luke Weber. Assists were by Danny Visoso, Reich, Weber and Makai Kuhn.

Newton improved its record to 18-3 on the season and advances to the championship match Friday at 4 p.m. against Hillsboro.

"We finished our season 5-11-1 with 55 goals against and 43 goals in favor," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "Our top scorers were Roberto Campos, a sophomore, with 15 goals and Kevin Gonzalez, a senior, Will Fearday, a freshman and Adrian Bustamonte, a sophomore, with six goals each.

"Top assisting players were Kevin Gonzalez, a senior, George Scheidemantel, a senior, and Campos with six each. Adam Brandenburger, a senior, had five.
