EHS Beats Vandalia, St. A, Altamont Fall In Soccer

Effingham High School easily handled Vandalia in soccer action Thursday, 8-1.

Gerard Herrera was the top scorer for the Hearts with four goals. Xander Marier, Travis Pearcy and Jackson Doedtman had one goal each.

"Roy Arellano debuted as a keeper last night and did a fantastic job," said EHS Coach Weston Peno. "He had six saves and great positioning to cut off balls before shots could occur.

"A shoutout to my midifeld as Menphis Leasher and Jeridyn Thomas were intregral parts in moving the ball forward and utilizing good passing and positioning to make the goals a possibility. The team played well all-around."

 

At Olney

Olney High School tallied a 6-2 soccer victory over Effingham St. Anthony Thursday.

Roberto Campos, a sophomore, scored both the Bulldogs' goals, one in each half.

The first goal came after a solo effort and a well placed goal. The second came from a penalty kick.

"The player of the match was Adam Brandenburger, a senior, who played everywhere and gave everything he had," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "We need to work on gettnin the defense settled and getting our young players ready to step up into varsity."

The Bulldogs drop to 2-5 and will play Hillsboro Saturday.

 

At Altamont

Altamont fell to Highland by a 7-0 count in Thursday action.

Highland stepped out to a 3-0 first half lead then tallied four more goals in the second half.

Altamont had two shots. Connor Klitzing had five saves.

Highland had 19 shots, 12 on goal.

Altamont drops to 4-2 on the season and is back in action Saturday against Olney at 11 a.m. in a varsity-only contest.
