Newton, T-town Win, EHS Falls In Soccer

NEWTON -- Newton High School pounded Altamont/Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City/Mid-Amerca Prep Co-op in soccer action Thursday.
The Eagles won the match, 6-0. Newton had 21 shots, 13 on goal and one save.
Ross Farley scored four goals for the Eagles while Carder Reich had two. Eli Weber had two assists while Farley, Alex Bergbower and Reich had one each.
"The defensive line put up a clean sheet shutting down the Indians," said Newton Coach Matt Creadore. "Drew Buerster had a huge save on a penalty kick."
The Eagles improved to 6-1 and host St. Joseph-Ogden Saturday at 11 a.m.
Altamont/CHBC/Mid-America had six shots, one on goal. Brennyn Abendroth had seven saves.
Altamont/CHBC/Mid-America dropped to 7-2 on the season and will be back in action Monday hosting Olney.
At Teutopolis
Jack Poelker had a fun birthday as he and his Teutopolis teammates handed Charleston a 4-1 loss in soccer competition Thursday.
Poelker scored a goal on his birthday while other goals came from Joey Niebrugge, Derek Deters and Matthew Deters.
The Shoes are back in action at Mattoon Saturday with a 10 a.m. junior varsity start with the varsity afterwards.
At Effingham
Effiingham fell to Apollo Conference opponent Mahomet-Seymour Thursday, 5-2.
"It was a really exciting game," said EHS Coach Weston Peno. "The first half was excellent, with both sides controlling well and finding numerous looks on goal. Mahomet-Seymour led 3-1 at the half.
"In the second half, our team went out strong, moved the ball well and used the wind to our advantage. We were able to put another goal in, but unfortunately Mahomet-Seymour was able to score two more."
Both goals for the Hearts came from Bryan Said Angel.
"I must brag on Armando Estrada as he had seven shots on goal," said Coach Peno. "Osvaldo Angel had three shots on goal and Tucker Moeller one shot. Brandon Duncan had six saves."
