St. A, Newton, Mt. Carmel Unbeaten In Soccer Tourney

Effingham St. Anthony, Newton and Mount Carmel are tied with two wins apiece in the St. Anthony/Teutopolis Soccer Tournament after Thursday action.

The Bulldogs blanked Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 8-0 at home while Salem and Harrisburg played to a 1-1 tie.

At Teutopolis, Newton handed Greenville a 7-0 loss while Pinckneyville edged Altamont 1-0 and Mount Carmel downed Teutopolis 4-1.

In the St. Anthony contest, Luke Swingler opened up the scoring after a throw ball from Jack Elder in the first four minutes and scored again wtih 15 minutes left in the first half from a pass from Reilly Ashton.

With 11 minutes left, Elder scored a third goal on a pass from Wade Lowrence who went to score the fourth Bulldogs goal with 4 1/2 minutes left after receiving a pass from Ashton. With three minutes left, Will Swingler scored on a pass from his brother Luke to bring the Bulldogs to a 5-0 first half lead.

Within a minute in the second half, Luke Swingler passed the ball to Kevin Gonzalez for the sixth goal. And five minutes later, Grace Hakman scored her first goal of the season after Will Swingler passed her the ball. The last goal came with five minutes left when Ashton got a pass from Will Swingler.

"Luke Swingler was our key offensive player of the match with two goals and two assists," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "Will Fonner won our key defensive player of the match with 10 steals. We played well and were able to push our players to play other positions. Our defense continues to grow and our mid-fielder's chemistry continues to get better.

"We need to work on communication and putting the ball on the back of the net when we have the opportunities. I'm very proud of the team."

Teutopolis' lone goal against Mount Carmel was by Linus Tanneryd on a PK for a handball in the box.

No information was turned in by Altamont.

The tournament comes to a close Saturday. Matches at St. Anthony are: Greenville vs. Altamont at 10 a.m., St. Anthony vs. Pinckneyville at 11:15 a.m., Altamont vs. Teutopolis at 12:30 p.m., Pinckeyville vs .Mount Carmel at 1:45 p.m. and Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran vs. Harrisburg at 3 p.m.

Matches at Teutopolis are: Salem vs. Mount Carmel at 10 a.m., Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran vs. Newton at 11:15 a.m., Harrsburg vs. Greenville at 12:30 p.m., Newton vs. Salem at 1:45 p.m. and Teutopolis vs. St. Anthony at 3 p.m.

Standings are: St. Anthony 2-0, Newton 2-0, Mount Carmel 2-0, Teutopolis 1-1, Pinckneyville 1-1, Altamont T-1, Salem tie-tie, Harrisburg T-1, Greenville 0-2 and Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 0-2.
