MOUNT VERNON -- Host Mount Vernon picked up a 3-1 victory over Effingham in high school soccer activity Tuesday.
The Rams' Isaiah Meyer got the first goal of the game with 38:46 left in the first half. Effingham's Andrew Bingham scored off a corner into the goal with 18 seconds left in the first half to tie the score at 1-1.
But the Rams came back with two goals in the second half, both from Austin Young. Young connected at 18:18 and then again at 15:42.
Effingham's Jared Minor had 12 saves. The Hearts drop to 2-4-1 on the season and start Apollo Conference play at Charleston Thursday.
Mount Vernon won the junior varsity match, 1-0.
At St. Anthony
Effingham St. Anthony High School handed Carlyle a 6-1 loss in soccer competition Tuesday.
"The day was beautiful coming onto the field to host the Carlyle Indians," said St. Anthony Coach Eric Morales. "Within 15 minutes of starting to warm up, we ended up under the pavilion finishing our warm up. Rain stopped and we quickly made our way to the field. We got through the announcements and then the rain came again and never stopped for the rest of the game.
"It was a wet and wild game, as the rain came down, the field quickly became slippery. The first 10 minutes of the game were fumbling the ball and slipping and sliding everywhere, for both sides. Thirteen minutes into the game we finally caught a break as Ryan Kruger poked the ball through the crowd as he slipped and went down, only to find Lexi Mendella sprinting to the ball and putting in the first goal of the night. That sparked the rest of the team.
"In the 20th minute, James Kabbes scored unassisted. A few minutes later Ryan Kruger scored three consecutive goals, assisted by Chandler Martelli and James Kabbes. With 10 minutes left in the half, we took a bad kick out of the air and own goaled for Carlyle. That put us at 5-1 at the half.
"Quickly into the second half, James Kabbes received a nice back heel from Kyle Hartke to find the back of the net, putting us up 6-1 to finish the game with the win.
"It was a very sloppy and nervous game. With this kind of weather you always risk injury from a bad slip or fall, so we did the best to play a very careful game. The Carlyle keeper had 15 saves, to our keeper's three."
St. Anthony again had 33 shots on goal while Carlyle had two shots on goal.
"Special mention to Chandler Martelli and Kyle Hartke for their extra efforts in tonight's game," said Morales. "The team, in general, did a fantastic job and we moved to 6-1-0 on the season."
St. Anthony is back in action Thursday hosting Harrisburg.
At Altamont
Teutopolis came calling and edged Altamont 1-0. The Wooden Shoes' Andy Mersman scored the lone goal of the contest.
Jon Beck had six saves.
In junior varsity play, T-town picked up a 2-0 victory over Altamont. Jarrett Hardiek scored both goals for the Shoes while Shawn Zerrusen had two saves.
