BREESE -- Effingham St. Anthony High School traveled to Breese Mater Dei and lost to the Knights but lost even more than the match Saturday.
"Charlie Schultz went down with a broken femur," said St. Anthony Coach Scott Demers. "The team sends their best wishes and prayers to the Schultz family and Charlie."
Benton Hakman provided the only goal for the Bulldogs who now stand at 3-4-1. St. Anthony returns to action today hosting Charleston in a 4:30 p.m. match.
At Mattoon
Effingham fell in varsity action to Mattoon 5-2 Saturday.
The Hearts took the early lead as Ivan Carillo scored with an assist from Alex Carie at the 25:30 mark. Mattoon came right back to knot the score at 1-1 on a goal by Chase Harvey at 9:37. The Green Wave then pushed into the lead as Harvey again scored, this time at the 5:13 mark. But the Hearts scrambled back into the contest as Kohdai Nishinda scored with 1:29 showing and the two teams went into the half tied at 2-2.
But that was the last scoring for Effingham. Mattoon's AJ Nichols came out to score all three goals in the second half at 17:58, 12:43 and 1:32.
Effingham took four shots on goal and Dalton Steele had nine keeper saves. Mattoon took 14 shots on goal with two keeper saves by Will Hopkins.
Effingham is now 6-1-1 on the season.
In the junior varsity match, Effingham blanked Mattoon 2-0. Goals came from Luis Ramos with an assist by Parth Maheshwa and from Sean Zerrusen. The JV Hearts are 5-2.
