NEWTON -- Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Newton 3-2 in soccer competition Thursday evening.

"This was our first time to travel to Newton and boy it was a wild one," said St. Anthony Coach Eric Morales. "Newton came out very aggressive and quick the first 10 minutes of the game. We finally woke up and started playing an even game.

"Then 14 minutes into the game, Donovan Hammer took a nice corner kick finding James Kabbes for a head ball right into the goal. Right before the half, Newton's Felix took the ball in, beating our last defender and putting the tying goal in right as the half ended.

"The second half was lots more aggressive, lots of bumping and shoving. Again, Ryan Kruger set up a corner kick, sending it right in, finding James again for another head ball. Ten minutes later, Ryan takes another corner kick and it bounces off a Newton defender's back and goes right in and we were up 3-1.

"With seconds left in the game, one of our defenders got a hand ball, giving Newton a penalty kick. Newton connected making the game 3-2."

The Bulldogs are now 10-2-2 on the season and will host Pana Saturday.
