Effingham High School edged Taylorville 1-0 in soccer competition Tuesday evening. The lone goal came from Michael Carie assisted by Hendrik Bolter with 2:36 left in the second half.
The Hearts had 12 shots on goal while Taylorville had six. Effingham's Frank Kasdorf had five goalie saves while Taylorville's Tyler Roth had nine.
EHS improves to 4-5-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the Apollo Conference.
Effingham also claimed the junior varsity match 1-0. Drake Hill scored the Hearts goal. It was the first win for the JV program which is now 1-9 on the season.
At St. Anthony
Efifngham St. Anthony got it together and beat Altamont 2-0 Tuesday evening.
"Altamont came out playing strong and controlling, winning every ball," said St. Anthony Coach Eric Morales. "We came out flat but got it together after 15 minutes of play. It went back and forth with both teams taking shots. The half ended in a 0-0 tie.
"I told the boys they needed to wake up and start going to the ball. The second half they came right out and in seven minutes Ryan Kruger took a corner kick, setting up a nice header for Donovan Hammer to put it right in. We continued the attack very strong, only to James Kabbes tracking down a loose ball in the box and finding the back of the net. Altamont played very well."
The Bulldogs are now 9-2-2 on the season and return to action Thursday at Newton.
The junior varsity played to a 1-1 tie. Alex Deters had a goal with an assist from Lexi Mendella.
