Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Decatur St. Teresa 3-2 in soccer competition Saturday.
"It couldn't have been a much better day for soccer," said St. Anthony Coach Eric Morales. "We were coming off a tough and aggressive game Thursday and lost Captain James Kabbes to an ankle injury."
The start of the contest was back and forth with both teams playing well holding each other to only thre shots apiece. Alex Deters then connected with Donovan Hammer on a pass that resulted in a goal. Quickly on the return, St. Teresa put one right in tying the score. Before the half ended, Hammer took a corner kick that bounced off a Decatur player's back and went in. St. Anthony held a 2-1 halftime lead.
"The second half was much the same, very aggressive and lots of back and forth play," said Morales. "Lexi Mendella had a loose ball breakaway, crossed it to Ryan Kruger finishing with a goal. Then with 45 seconds left, St. Teresa took a shot. Nick Grunloh stopped it but dropped the ball and St. Teresa knocked it in. It was just a great game."
