Bulldogs Edge Hearts in Soccer Action

Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Effingham in soccer action Saturday, 1-0.
The lone goal of the contest came with 7:47 remaining in the first half by Donovan Hammer for the Bulldogs. St. Anthony had six shots on goal. Nick Grunloh had seven keeper saves.
"It was a beautiful day for soccer," said St. Anthony Coach Eric Morales. "Temps were just right. When these two teams come to play, it's always a battle. A battle of who's better, a battle of bragging rights. That's what Saturday's game was, both teams came out ready to go the distance. It went back and forth all game. Both teams had good looks. Until finally with seven minutes left in the game, Ryan Kruger headed the ball towards the goal from a cross, as the keeper Frank Kasdorf came out to retrieve it. Donovan got to the ball seconds before the goalie did putting us up.
"We got much stronger in the second half, allowing Effingham only one shot on goal."
The Bulldogs are now 4-1-1 on the season.
Effingham had seven shots on goal. Frank Kasdorf had five keeper saves. The Hearts drop to 3-3.
In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony blanked EHS 2-0. Goals were by Mason Thomas and Alex Deters. The Bulldogs improve to 1-1. The Hearts are now 0-5.
