The Altamont Tribe U14 soccer team will have an initial parent meeting Monday, July 14 at 6 p.m. at the soccer field at Altamont Grade School. The team's first practice of the season will immediately follow the meeting.
All boys and girls who will be in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade this fall are encouraged to come out that night and try out for the team. While most of the players attend either Altamont Grade School, Altamont Lutheran Interparish School or Beecher City Grade School, students from all area schools are welcome.
The Tribe is sponsored by the Altamont Lions Club, and are a competitive club team that plays games each year against teams from all over East Central Illinois. Last year's schedule featured games against teams from Effingham, Teutopolis, Newton, Robinson, Olney, Mattoon and Marshall, and the Tribe have played against teams from Tolono, Arcola, Salem, Charleston, and Vandalia. The Tribe is coached by Lion Lance Freezeland and Lion Steve Stice.
The goal is to develop individual players' skills and to foster a love of the world's most popular sport.
"While the club has been very successful on the field over the past five seasons, compiling a record of 29 wins, 16 losses and 10 draws, we do not believe that that is what ultimately determines whether we are successful or not," said Freezeland. "Instead, we measure success based on the accomplishments made at the individual level, as well as the development of the complete player, on and off the field. Over the past decade, we have sent dozens of players on to successful high school soccer careers, and some have furthered their careers by playing at the college level. If you think that you have what it takes to be a member of the Tribe, come out Monday, July 14 at 6 p.m. and show us what you can do. It's going to be a fun year."
