(Manaus, Brazil) -- Portugal broke American hearts by pulling out a 2-2 draw against the U.S. men's national team with seconds to spare in each squad's second game at the World Cup in Brazil.

Cristiano Ronaldo fed a cross to the head of Silvestre Varela for a goal in extra time. The U.S. had been given the lead off a goal from Clint Dempsey in the 81st minute. Jermaine Jones hit the equalizer for the United States in the 64th minute after Portugal's Nani scored early in the match.

The U.S. is now tied atop Group G with Germany with four points. The teams meet Thursday in the final match of the group round, while Ghana and Portugal play at the same time. A win or draw for the Americans would be enough to advance to the knockout round. The U.S. can also move on with a loss as long as they beat Ghana and Portugal on goal differential.
