U.S. Men's Soccer Team Advances To Quarterfinals, Wednesday, July 31 U.S. Olympic Schedule

The United States men's soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals after blanking Guinea 3-0 Tuesday at the Olympics in Paris.

The U.S. lost its opener in the Games to France by a 3-0 count but since has come back to clinch second place in Group A with a 4-1 victory over New Zealand and a 3-0 win over Guinea.

Against Guinea, the Americans got two goals from 21-year-old Kevin Paredes and another from Djordje Mihailovic. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made six saves and earned his first Olympic shutout. He had a leaping stoppage-time save when Cherif Camara had a header. Schulte has several relatives who live in the area including great-aunt Pat Brumleve of Effingham. Brumleve's sister Mary Jo is his grandmother, Kay Jansen, a great-aunt from Effingham, Don Brumleve a great-uncle and Judy Wittenberg, a great-aunt from Strasburg.

With the victory, the U.S. will now advance to the knockout stage for the first time since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The squad will now face Morocco, which handed Argentina an upset loss in group play. The match will be held Friday at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
