The United States soccer team opened by suffering a 3-0 loss to France.
The Americans held their own for an hour in Group A before a crowd of 67,000 at the Stade Velodrome.
The U.S. kept France off balance and almost moved ahead on two different occasions. Les Bleus were in control for most of the opening half but didn't get near the goal. U.S. goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, who has relatives in the Effingham area, had a save in the 35th minute.
Les Bleus' Alexandre Lacazette, found space in midfield and beat Schulte to the left post for the first goal.
The U.S. almost tied but Paxten Aaronson's header was saved by France's Guillaume Restes. Seconds, later John Tolkin missed with his own header.
France then scored in the 69th and finished off with a corner kick to make it 3-0 in the 85th.
The U.S. did score as Griffin Yow found the net but his stoppage time marker was offside.
New Zealand beat Guinea 2-1 in the other Group A match.
The USA was playing soccer for the first time since 2008.
The USA returns to action against New Zealand Saturday at 2 p.m. on USA Network, Telemundo and Peacock.
