Ilya Kovalchuk Retires from NHL

(Newark, NJ) -- Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk has stunned fans by announcing his retirement from hockey yesterday. The 30-year-old says he has been considering retirement for the last 18 months. The Russian native spent 11 seasons in the NHL, including the last 3 1/2 with New Jersey. He skated his first 7 1/2 seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers. Kovalchuk leaves the NHL with 417 career goals and 399 assists.
