One Race Contested At Effingham Co. Fair

A child was injured in the opening race. The starting gate ended up going into the first row of the grandstand, and struck the child. The girl, who is related to several people connected with racing at the fair, was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, then was airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital. The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident and a press release is expected later this morning.
Today's racing at the fair has been canceled.
In the first race Sunday, Adalecia was the winner in the Al & Mary Lea Jeffers Memorial Stakes 2-Year-Old Filly Pace, Division 1.
Adalecia, driven byJamaica Patton, went the distance in 2:02 2/5.
There will be a decision later today to decide if harness races will be contested the rest of the week at the fair.
