The International Skating Union voted Tuesday to raise the minimum age for figure skating competition at senior international events, including the Olympics, to 17 from the current 15.

The ISU said the new rule was “for the sake of protecting the physical and mental health, and emotional well-being of the skaters.”

The move comes in the wake of the controversy surrounding 15-year-old Russian champion Kamila Valieva at this year’s Beijing Winter Games.
