Area Wrestlers Compete At State

CHAMPAIGN -- Three area high school wrestlers are competing in the Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament at the State Farm Center.

 

Effingham High School's Jon Perry competed in the 152 pound class. He lost his opener by an 8-3 decision to Zachary Gross of U-High. He next will take on Luke Christie of Bishop McNamara today.

Cumberland High School's Iysten Syfert competed in the 170 pound class. Syfert won his opener over Brandon Navarro of IC Catholic by a 4-0 decision. He then lost to Griffin Luke of Lenawins with a fall in 2:42. Syfert will face either Zane Pannell of Fulton or Wyatt Young of Manteno today after those two square off.

Also competing for Cumberland was Colby Ryan in the 195 pound class. Ryan won his opener over Ethan Ladd of Macomb by a 4-2 decision. He then fell to Ashton Harvey of Coal City by a 6-0 decision. He will now face either Brody Cuppermell of St. Thomas or Jaylan Lacey of Westmont after those two wrestle today.

The Pirates had a third wrestler competing at State. Noah Carl wrestled in the 285 pound class. Carl lost his opener to Michael Esquivel of YOC with a fall in 4:21. Carl will now face Elijah Friedrichsen of Erie today.
