EHS' Perry, C'land's Syfert, Ryan Headed To State Wrestling Tourney

Effingham High School's Jon Perry and Cumberland's Iysten Syfert and Colby Ryan are headed to the State Wrestling Tournament after all three finished in third place in their respective weight classes at the Vandalia Sectional last weekend.

First, second, third and fourth place finishers from sectionals advance to the State Tournament.

Perry competed in the 152 pound class and had a first round bye. He fell to Nick Deloach Jr. of Cahokia in a fall in 4:21. He then won over Caleb Siebers of Carmi with a fall in 1:06. He downed Jerek Keoughan of Fairfield with a fall in 1:53. In the third place match, he defeated Braden Johnson of Roxana with a fall in 1:23.

Cumberland's Syfert opened with a win over Chad Gray of Metro East with a fall in 2:17 in the 170 pound class. He then downed Wyatt Upton of Pittsfield with a fall in 3:26. He reached the final four only to drop a match to Kyus Root of Unity with a fall in 6:35. In the third place match, he then was to meet Mason Davis of PIttsfield but an injury gave him the third place win.

Ryan, a member of the Pirates team, competed in the 195 pound bracket. He won over Cody Dickerson of Sparta with a fall in 1:45. He downed William Blue of Taylorville with a fall in 5:26. He reached the final four and fell to Konnor Dagg or Fairfield in a 4-3 decision. He dropped into the third place match where he won over William Blue for the second time with a fall in 3:02.

Also competing at Vandalia was Effingham's Kaiden Stewart in the 106 pound bracket. He won over Devon Hulett of Carlinville with a fall in :26. He lost to Drew Sadler of Anna with a fall in :54. He then tallied a victory over Zach Daly of Metro East with a fall in 2:19. He then fell to Mason Gray of Mount Zion with a fall in 1:48 to exit the tourney.

The three wrestlers will compete in the State Tournament which begins Thursday and ends Saturday at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
