EHS, C'land Wrestlers Advance To Sectional

OLNEY -- Effingham High School's Jon Perry and Kaiden Stewart advanced from the Class 1A Olney Regional Saturday while numerous Cumberland wrestlers also advanced.

The top three places in regional action advance to sectional play. There were 11 teams competing at Olney and Effingham finished ninth with 63.5 points.

Perry, a senior, captured first place at 152 pounds, winning over Braxton Manuel of Tolono Unity with a fall in 1:38. Perry advances with a 35-6 record.

Stewart, a freshman, finished third at 106 pounds and will also advance. Stewart defeated Jesse Ireland (Westville), with a fall in :46. Stewart advances with a 27-13 record.

Winning at 106 pounds was Cumberland's Hank Warfel. Warfel downed Satchel Taylor of Mount Carmel with a fall in 1:59. Warfel, a junior, sports a 31-5 record.

Also advancing for the Pirates were Iysten Syfert who finished third in the 170 pound class. Syfert, a senior, defeated Joey Farrar of Mount Carmel, MD 13-3 to take third. Syfert is 37-6 on the season.

Cumberland's Colby Ryan finished third at 195 pounds. He defeated Myles VonBehren of Monticello with a fall in 3:40. Ryan, a senior, sports a 36-5 record.

Also taking third from Cumberland was Noah Carl. Carl defeated Brandon Peters of Monticello with a fall in 2:30. Carl is a junior with a 37-5 record.

Finishing just out of advancing were Effingham's Robert Reardon fourth at 138 pounds and Cumberland's Braydon Olmstead fourth at 126.

Those finishing in the top three now advance to the Vandalia Sectional this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12 to earn a chance to go to State. First through fourth will advance from sectional action to the State Tournament at the State Farm Center in Champaign February 17-19.
