High school football is in the air in Illinois, which means the smell of concession stand porkchop sandwiches on the grill isn’t far behind.

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is teaming up with the Illinois Pork Producers Association this fall to take this gameday tradition to the next level.

The IHSA and the Illinois Pork Producers Association are proud to present the 2021 Pork & Pigskins Championship, which will crown the best porkchop sandwich in the state among IHSA concession stand chefs.

“High school sports in Illinois and porkchop sandwiches just go together,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “The band, the cheerleaders, the fans, and the smell of the concession stand grills are all integral parts of the high school sports experience. We are so thankful that the Illinois Pork Producers Association appreciates this and are excited to offer this fun way for our grillmasters to compete for a state title.”

In addition to being named the "official pre-game meal of the IHSA", the porkchop sandwich that is crowned state champion will receive an assortment of prizes from the Illinois Pork Producers Association.

“High school sports are a big part of the communities our producers live in,” said Illinois Pork Producers Association President Alan Kollmann. “Many producers can be found helping prepare those gameday concessions or in the stands cheering alongside members of their community. We wish all the high schools’ luck as they compete to find the best game day porkchop sandwich in Illinois.”

The main course details on the tournament timing and structure will be released to participants in the coming weeks, so in the meantime as an appetizer, post pictures and video of your porkchop contenders on social media with the hashtag #PorkandPigskins
