ALTAMONT -- Harness racing was pretty exciting Monday at the Effingham County Fair as area horses and drivers competed.

Jacob Roedl, an Edgewood resident, captured first in the Free For All Pace, Division 1. Roedl who owns and trains Flying Marvin, took over the driving duties and moved into a length lead up the backstretch. All four horses were in single file before Flying Marvin moved into a three length lead at the three quarter mile marker and moved ahead by four to win in 2:02 4/5, the fastest mile of the week.

In that race, Jack DeRousse drove Mykonos. What's the importance there? DeRousse is 89 years old.

In the second race of the day, the 2-Year-Old Open Pace, Gentle Bens Money held the lead on the straightaway but She's All Too Real moved up in a rush to take the lead. She's All Too Real still held the lead at the half berfore Heavy Pressure, driven by driving leader Matthew Avenatti, came driving up to lead but went offstride at the top of the stretch. Avenatti got Heavy Pressure back on track and ended up taking the victory in 2:06 2/5. That padded Avenatti's lead with five more points.

In the opener, the Maiden Trot AE; Nonwinners $1,500 In 21, Freddie Patton Jr., who sits in second in the driver's tandings, took Frontier Manard, a 22-time winner, into a two length lead at the three quarter mile mark and went on for the victory in 2:10 1/5.

The third race, the Filly & Mare Trot was claimed by Fox Valley Elicit. Four horses were set to compete but two were scratched. That brought it down to Western Musclelady and Fox Valley Elicit. Western Musclelady opened up a three length lead. Western Musclelady led past the grandstand but Fox Valley Elicit came on to go even for the lead and the pair battled down the stretch. Darla Maritn Lohman took the victory behind Fox Valley Elicit in 2:05.

The No. 5 race, the Free For All Pace, Division 2, was claimed by Unimagineable. Jordan Patton took Unimagineable to the lead but Rocking Retirement moved ahead and led by one past the stands. Unimagineable moved to the outside and trailed by a half at the three quarter mark. Then it was a turn for home and only one length separated the three horses in the field. Unimagineable then pushed into the front for the win in 2:03 4/5.

The final race, the Open Maiden Pace AE: ICF Nonwinners 2 went to Amazon Princess, owned, trained and driven by C. Alan Finn. I'm Cny Iyq took the lead but Incredible Cache challengedstride for stride at the three quarter mile mark. The three horses lined up across the field down the stretch and Amazon Princess pulled out the victory in 2:04 3/5.

Matt Avenatti moved his driver's standings tally to 31 points followe dby Freddie Patton Jr. with 21.

Racing continues Tuesday with six heats on tap and a 1 p.m. start.
