Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics announced Thursday that no fans will be allowed at the Games, which are beginning in two weeks with the July 23 opening ceremony.

The news came hours after Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga put Tokyo under a Covid-19 state of emergency due to increasing infections and the spread of the highly-contagious Delta variant.

The decision applies to Japanese spectators, as foreign fans were banned months ago.
