The Effingham area had disc golfers playing throughout the region last weekend.

Effingham's Mark Jones and Joseph Garland Saturday began US Amateur match play competition at a qualifier at Mesker Park in Evansville, Indiana.

The competition was fierce, with never more than one to two to three strokes separating Jones and Garland and their opponents. The battle came down to the final hole when Jones and Garland birdied to win by one shot.

The duo will play two more rounds in an effort to qualify for the nationals. Garland and Hadley Majors of Effingham competed at the event in Kansas two years ago.

Oakland City, Indiana was the site Saturday of the Mighty Oaks Challenge presented by Dynamic Discs.

Paul Jones of Effingham competed in the Intermediate Division. Jones finished with a 105 total to finish fifth.

Andrew "Butter" Miller of Effingham competed in the Novice Division, and finished fourth with a +15 total, goiing 61-62.

Another tournament was held in Carmel, Indiana Saturday.

Ben Ruholl of Effingham competed in the Recreational Division and finished third with a +2 116 total, with rounds of 62-54. Ruholl went +5 in the first round, but bounced back with a -3 in the second round.

DG players were also to be found over the weekend in Swansea, Illinois at the Clinton Hills Disc Golf Course in Bicentennial Park.

Cole Mintert of Mattoon finished 10th in the Intermediate Division at +12. Mintert was tied for the lead at even par with Mikey Beal of Centralia after the first round, but shot a +12 in the second round where a nine on one hole spoiled his round.

Beal again shot even par on the second round to finish second for the tournament.
