After several years as an independent in high school sports, Teutopolis is considering joining a conference.

The issue arose at this month's Teutopolis school board meeting. During the board member comments portion of the meeting, Board President Jim Buhnerkempe wondered aloud whether the district should reconsider its independent status and join a conference.

Several board members suggested such an idea should be explored.

Several years ago, when the decision was made to leave the National Trail Conference, Teutopolis was invited to join the Apollo Conference, even though Teutopolis doesn't play football. Teutopolis declined the invitation and made the decision to go independent.

Now, the Apollo is again being considered, if the conference is still interested. Teutopolis Superintendent Bill Fritcher contacted Effingham Activities Director Dave Woltman about the matter, since Effingham is an Apollo member.

Woltman, in turn, contacted the chairman of the Apollo Athletic Directors and the chairman of the Apollo high school principals as to interest in the idea. That's where things stand.
