EHS, Cumberland Wrestlers Move On to Sectionals

Two Effingham High School wrestlers will be competing in sectional action after taking part in the Class 2A Herrin Regional Saturday.

Brandon Marschewski captured second place in the 145 pound category. He won his opening match over Olney's Steven Pence, 6-4 before falling in the title match to Jayvin Quinn of Mattoon 13-1.

Tyler Marschewski took third place in the 138 pound division. He started with an 11-2 victory over Riley Kind of Marion. He then fell to Will Meader of Carbondale 16-1 but came back with two wins over Trevon Bray of Mount Vernon with a pin in 2:52 and Dylan Reagan of Herrin with a pin in 5:10.

Effingham's Zach Keitel finished just out of advancing with fourth place in the 126 pound division.

The Marschewskis will advance to the Mascoutah Sectional this Friday and Saturday.

Wininng the team regional title was Mattoon with 169.5 points followed by Carbondale 162, Olney 154, Mattoon 121.5, Herrin 101, Centralia 70.5, Charleston 56, Effingham 48 and Mount Vernon 43.

Class 1A Lawrenceville Regional

Cumberland had two regional winners and four others who advanced by finishing in the top three at the Lawrenceville Regional.

Michael Carpenter claimed the regional championship at 138 pounds while Konnir Hinz won at 145 pounds. Carpenter pinned Ethan McKinistry of Lawrenceville in 3:09. He then downed Bradyn Kaiser in the finals 5-1.

Hinz downed Nick Lawrence of Mount Carmel with a pin in 1:43. He then defeated Cody Phililps of Vandalia with a pin in 1:25.

Blayne Donsbach took second at 120 pounds. Donsbach defeated Hunter Oates of Carmi White County with a pin in 1:13 and lost in the finals to Tanner Swain of Vandalia with a pin in :37.

Ethan Whitaker finished second by downing Alec Garner of Carmi White County with a pin in 1:22 but had to default in the finals to Jarrett Paslay of Vandalia.

Tristan Overvig took third at 182 pounds by winning his first match over Fernando Zuniga of Robinson with a pin in 2:12 before losing to Jacob Muench of Carlyle in a 7-3 decision. He then had an 11-3 decision over Dalton Farrar of Mount Carmel. He finished third with a pin over Theron Stewart of Fairfield in 3:25.

Drew Fritts finished third at 195 pounds. He downed Matt Woods of Carmi White County with a pin in 1:55 then fell to Gavin Smith of Lawrenceville, 13-11. Fritts beat Malachai Lloyd of Mount Carmel with a pin in :35. He then finished third with a pin over David Glodo of Fairfield in 3:23.

Vandalia claimed the team title with 229.5 points followed by Cumberland 132, Lawrenceville 118, Fairfield 103, Robinson 97.5, Mount Carmel 89.5, Carmi White County 68.8 and Caryle 67.
