Two U.S. Swimmers Head Home After Alleged Robbery

Two American Olympic swimmers were on their way home Friday after being pulled off a plane a day earlier to testify about an alleged robbery at the Rio Olympics that Brazilian police said was made up. The lawyer for a third U.S. swimmer said he would make a $10,800 payment and leave Brazil later in the day.
The drama surrounding the alleged robbery of American swimmers -- and their ever-changing descriptions of it -- has shocked and deeply angered Brazilians, who said it cast a false negative shadow on their city and their Olympics. The story has also dominated Olympic headlines, overshadowing the worthy accomplishments of athletes who had trained for years just to get to Rio and set records during their performances at these Olympics.
The rapid-fire developments early Friday came hours after police announced that Ryan Lochte and three of his teammates had not been held at gunpoint after a night of partying, as he claimed. Instead, Brazilian police said the men, while intoxicated, vandalized a gas station bathroom and were questioned by armed guards before they paid for the damage and left.
The saga was an enormous embarrassment for the U.S. Olympic team, which had otherwise dominated the games. It also deeply wounded a country eager to prove it could host the first games in Latin America despite concerns it could not keep athletes and spectators safe from rampant street crime.
"No robbery was committed against these athletes. They were not victims of the crimes they claimed," Civil Police Chief Fernando Veloso told a news conference.
As two of the swimmers, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger, were whisked through airport security and onto a plane home Thursday night, their attorney insisted they had nothing to do with Lochte's story. Lochte himself left the country earlier this week.
Bentz and Conger "were heard only as witnesses. This has to be made very, very clear," lawyer Sergio Riera told The Associated Press. "They did not make any untruthful testimony. They did not lie in their statements."
A lawyer for another swimmer, James Feigen, said early Friday that the athlete had reached an agreement with a judge in which he planned to donate 35,000 Brazilian reals ($10,800) to an "institution" and leave the country later in the day.
Attorney Breno Melaragno said under the agreement, Feigen will make the donation, get his passport back and depart.
U.S., Spain to Meet in Semifinals
Count Brazilian legend Oscar Schmidt among those eager to see the United States and Spain reunite in Olympic basketball one round earlier than normal.
In a rematch of the previous two gold-medal games, Team USA (6-0) meets Spain (4-2) in Friday's semifinals at 2:45 p.m. ET at the Carioca Arena 1.
"The United States should win," said Schmidt, who ranks as the all-time leading scoring in men's Olympic basketball and works now as a TV broadcaster.
"But Spain can win."
Much will depend on the health of Spanish center Pau Gasol, who, at 36, remains his country's most important player at both ends. Coach Sergio Scariolo told Spanish reporters Thursday that, because of a lingering calf injury, Gasol's participation in the game can't be guaranteed.
The Americans, of course, are convinced they'll see Gasol in uniform anchoring both Spain's offense and defense, especially since his brother, Marc Gasol, couldn't join the national team this summer thanks to his ongoing recovery from foot surgery.
Yet even with Spain fielding only one Gasol, no one will have to convince Team USA that Schmidt is right about the threat posed by the Spaniards. Coach Mike Krzyzewski knows it better than anyone after Team USA narrowly defeated Spain in the past two Olympic title games, in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.
The Americans achieved those victories by just 11 (118-107) and seven points (107-100), respectively, then dodged a highly anticipated showdown with the Spaniards on Spanish soil -- with a weakened U.S. roster -- at the 2014 FIBA World Cup when the host country was stunningly ousted in the quarterfinals by France.
Muhammad Takes Women's 400 Hurdles
Dalilah Muhammad of the United States went out hard and held on strong to win the women's 400-meter hurdles gold medal in 53.13 seconds.
European champion Sara Slott Peterson of Denmark took silver in 53.55 on Thursday.
The United States also picked up the bronze medal, with Ashley Spencer storming home to finish third in a personal best 53.72.
"We are making history out here,'' Muhammad said of the U.S. team's gold rush, which is up to eight gold medals with three days of competition to come.
Bolt Captures Gold in 200
Usain Bolt tilted his head backward and screamed. He plaintively raised his palms to the sky, tugged hard on his shirt, then angrily ripped the No. 6 sticker off his right hip.
It had the look of an unthinkable loss in the Olympic 200 meters. But there's only one opponent that can really beat Bolt: time.
The Jamaican superstar romped in what he says is likely his last Olympic individual race Thursday night, but finished in 19.78 seconds, .59 short of his own world record, the one he said he really wanted to break.
"I wanted to run a faster time," said Bolt, who turns 30 on the night of the closing ceremony. "I knew it was going to be hard to break the world record, because I could tell by my legs. When I came off the corner, my legs decided, 'Listen, we're not going to go any faster.'"
