Slow out of the blocks? Doesn't matter if you're Usain Bolt.
The Jamaican caught Justin Gatlin, who had a strong start and led for half the race, to win his record third straight men's 100-meter final Sunday night and seventh Olympic gold.
Bolt, who gave himself a fist bump on the chest just before crossing the line, finished in 9.81. He was followed by Gatlin (9.89) and Canada's Andre De Grasse (9.91).
"It was brilliant,'' Bolt said. "I didn't go so fast, but I'm so happy I won. I told you guys I was going to do it."
This is the third time Gatlin has finished second to Bolt. The previous two times were at the 2013 and 2015 world championships.
The 29-year-old Bolt, whose reaction time of 0.155 was second slowest of the eight finalists, is the second-oldest 100 champion in Olympic history. Linford Christie was 32 in 1992.
The 6-foot-5 sprinter overcame his typically slow unfurling from the blocks; he was second-to-last after the break.
"I just said, 'Take your time and chip away,''' Bolt said.
Churning his legs to gradually build up speed, Bolt eventually caught Gatlin with about 40 meters left and took it to warp speed. The rest was a matter of how hard he wanted to run to the line.
van Niekerk Breaks World Record
Exploding out of the blocks in Lane 8, Wayde van Niekerk didn't see another runner in the entire Olympic 400-meter final.
He didn't need to. It was just him against the clock.
The South African sprinter broke Michael Johnson's 17-year-old world record on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, leaving two of the greatest one-lap runners of this era in his dust. Van Niekerk finished in 43.03 seconds -- 0.15 seconds faster than Johnson ran on Aug. 26, 1999, at the world championships in Seville, Spain. Johnson's mark was considered one of the almost untouchable records in track.
"I was running blind all the way," Van Niekerk said. "I thought someone was going to catch me -- what's going on, what's going on -- and it gave me motivation to keep on pushing."
Van Niekerk, 24, became the first South African since 1928 to win an Olympic gold medal on the track, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
He leaned at the finish line, which he really didn't need to do, as Kirani James (43.76) of Grenada and LaShawn Merritt (43.85) of the United States weren't even in the picture. James, the defending Olympic champion, finished with the silver, and Merritt, who won gold eight years ago in Beijing, hung on for bronze as he staggered across the line.
Walsh, Ross Advance in Volleyball
NBA stars came out to cheer for her. The crowd at the Copacabana beach volleyball venue sang "Happy Birthday."
And Kerri Walsh Jennings earned a spot in the Olympic semifinals.
All in all, a pretty good first 40 minutes as a 38-year-old.
"It's a unique experience, and I loved it," the three-time gold medalist said after she and April Ross beat Australia 21-14, 21-16 to move two wins from her fourth Olympic title.
The Americans will play Brazil's Agatha and Barbara -- the defending world champions -- on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the gold-medal match. The other women's semifinal match will feature Germany and the top-seeded Brazilian team of Larissa and Talita.
Both sessions were in front of a packed arena, and NBA stars Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, DeAndre Jordan and Jimmy Butler showed up for the midnight match that featured their fellow Americans.
The U.S. basketball players tried to get a wave going and started a "U-S-A!" chant when they were shown on the venue video board. They also squabbled with fans behind them -- it's hard to see past a 6-foot-11 NBA forward -- but engaged in some playful banter with Australia fans across the sand.
Ross said she has enjoyed the way athletes from different sports meet and root for one another.
"That's one of the biggest things I love about the Olympics," she said.
U.S. Has Close One Over Serbia
Written in Portuguese on one wall above center court at Carioca Arena is the phrase "Um mundo novo." Translation: a new world. It didn't seem that way in men's Olympic basketball -- until now.
Threatened by Australia in its previous game, the U.S. men's team survived a heart-racing final seconds to defeat disciplined and experienced Serbia 94-91 on Friday night and extend its winning streak in international tournaments to 49 games.
No. 50 is no given, and suddenly, a gold medal that seemed a formality just a few days ago is anything but certain.
The Americans, boasting a roster stuffed with NBA All-Stars, elite outside shooters but only two former Olympians, look very vulnerable and somewhat lost on the world's hardwood stage.
"We do have more talent," said U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has been warning about overconfidence since his team's arrival in Brazil. "We have to get our talent playing even much better as a team."
Despite a ferocious start, the Americans couldn't put away the underdog Serbs, who ran their cut-and-cut-again offense with precision and had a chance to tie it in the final seconds. But guard Bogdan Bogdanovic's 3-pointer from the left wing was a little long and Kevin Durant secured the rebound and the relieved Americans walked off the floor with their streak intact but their standing shaken.
Kyrie Irving scored 15 points and Durant and Carmelo Anthony added 12 apiece for the U.S. team, which arrived in South American lauded as the latest version of an American super squad. However, after their 10-point win over the Aussies earlier this week and now a nail-biter against the Serbs, the rest of the field might be starting to believe the U.S. can be taken.
Murray Wins Gold
Andy Murray is making a habit of accomplishing things that hadn't been done in a while. Or ever.
Murray became the first tennis player in Olympic history with two singles gold medals, winning his second in a row by wearing down Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the Rio de Janeiro Games in a back-and-forth, four-hour final Sunday.
"Anything could have happened," said Murray, who took the final four games after trailing 5-3 in the fourth set.
"Emotionally, it was tough. Physically, it was hard," he said. "So many ups and downs."
At the 2012 London Olympics, Murray won a singles gold and mixed doubles silver at the All England Club. That was also the site of his historic 2013 Wimbledon championship, ending a 77-year wait for a British man to claim the trophy.
Murray won Wimbledon again last month, raising his Grand Slam title count to three.
On Sunday, the No. 2-seeded Murray stopped the resurgent run of the 141st-ranked del Potro, who knocked off No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the first round after getting stuck in an athletes village elevator for 40 minutes earlier in the day then beat No. 3 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. No man ever has defeated the top three seeds on the way to a gold, but 2009 US Open champion del Potro came close before winding up with a silver to go alongside his bronze from 2012.
Venus Williams, Rajeev Ram Finish With Silver
Bethanie Mattek-Sands figures she'll retire the stars-and-stripes socks and frame them with her gold medal.
In an all-American mixed doubles final Sunday, Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock won the title as first-time Olympians. And they did it against an opponent who has won as many medals -- and as many golds -- as any tennis player in history.
Mattek-Sands and Sock beat Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram to deny Williams a record fifth gold. With the silver, Williams still tied the Olympic mark with her fifth medal; Kathleen McKane also won five (one gold) in the 1920s.
Justin Rose Takes Gold in Golf
From the top step of the podium, Justin Rose bowed his head as the Olympic gold medal was placed around his neck, and he stared at it for the longest time.
Even for a major champion, this was more than he ever imagined.
"It's a moment you've seen in many other sports," Rose said. "The medal ceremony is what it's all about, really."
This was why the 36-year-old Englishman circled the Rio Games on his calendar all along, even as some of the biggest names in golf began pulling out. Rose came to Rio to watch, and to win.
And when his turn came Sunday, he delivered a gold-medal performance worthy of a 112-year wait.
The final round was so tense that no one led by more than one shot until Rose hit a 40-yard pitch to 3 feet, a shot every bit as significant as the 4-iron from 229 yards on the 18th hole at Merion when he won the 2013 U.S. Open.
The birdie gave him a 4-under 67 and a two-shot victory over Henrik Stenson to win golf's first gold medal since 1904 in St. Louis.
Matt Kuchar of the United States closed with a 63 to win the bronze.
