Former NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Mike Wallace was punched in the face by the youngest of the three men who were arrested on assault charges for an alleged attack on the Wallace family after a Rascal Flatts concert Friday, according to the case files.

All three have a July 22 court date in North Carolina District Court on assault charges, and their court files obtained Tuesday by ESPN detailed their actions.

Nathan Lucas, 22, was charged with misdemeanor simple assault for striking Wallace, 57, in the face with a closed fist.

Paul Lucas, 29, was charged with misdemeanor assault on a woman for kicking Wallace's daughter, 31-year-old Lindsey Wallace Van Wingerden, in her ribs, left arm and leg.

Randolph Mangum, 24, was charged with simple assault for striking Wallace's son-in-law, 31-year-old Thomas Van Wingerden, in the body using his feet and hands.

Wallace, who has not raced in NASCAR since February 2015, said he has had stitches in his mouth and damage to his teeth as well as a concussion. He said Tuesday that he will lose at least one of his front teeth, and the implant procedure will take five to 10 months. He is also scheduled to see a doctor Tuesday about blurry vision he has had since the attack.

The injuries to the Wallace family are listed as minor in the police report, which is why the assault charges are misdemeanors. To reach felony status in North Carolina, an assault without extenuating circumstances on someone who is able to put up a defense requires serious bodily injury, which is defined as an injury that creates a substantial risk of death or that causes serious permanent disfigurement, coma, a permanent or protracted condition that causes extreme pain or permanent or protracted loss or impairment of the function of any bodily member or organ, or that results in prolonged hospitalization.
