The University of Illinois board of trustees officially approved Josh Whitman as the school's athletic director in a special meeting Monday.

Whitman was named the athletic director by interim chancellor Barbara Wilson on Feb. 17 after a search that exceeded three months.

Whitman, who played football at Illinois and earned his law degree from the university, was hired from Division III Washington University in St. Louis.

Whitman succeeds Mike Thomas, who was fired on Nov. 9 following scandals in the athletic department.
