The EIU Department of Theatre Arts refreshes William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with a new modern perspective. EIUs version of Romeo + Juliet was both adapted and directed by Theatre Arts faculty Anne Thibault, who has a vast background in theatre and has worked as an actress, playwright and director for twenty years. Thibault toured with the National Shakespeare Company and previously worked as the Associate Artistic Director at Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre. Audiences can expect to see the timeless story of Romeo + Juliet mixed with modern flare. "Triumph, and the power of the theatre to change the world, inspired the setting for this production" says Thibault. "Our play-within-a-play takes place in the near future of a very scary America. [we] created a fictional world that reflects both this history and the fears implicit in our current national conversation". Performances of Romeo + Juliet are April 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30PM as well as a matinée performance on April 24th at 2:00p. m. For one night only, on Friday April 22, there will be a post-show audience discussion immediately following the performance. Tickets are $12 for the general public, $10 for EIU Faculty/Staff and Seniors (62+), and $5 for students. Purchase tickets at the Doudna Fine Arts Center Box office or online.
