The Helen Matthes Library will hold the Ground Breaking Ceremony for its new facility on Tuesday, December 2 at 10 a. m. at 200 N. Third St. in Effingham.
The event which is open to everyone will include a special story time and "demolition ceremony" for children. The ground breaking marks the start of the construction phase for the new 27,000 sq. ft. facility, with the Helen Matthes Library due to move in during the summer of 2015.
At a Special Board Meeting in October, the Library's Board voted to accept the lowest bid, made by Poettker Construction, to refurbish the former Fifth Third Bank Building on 3rd. Street in downtown Effingham into its new home.
So far the Library has raised over $1.3 million dollars of its $2 million fundraising goal towards the construction costs of their new library building, though $700,000 remains.
Refreshments will be provided and parking is available. No invitation or library card is needed to attend. For more details, visit www.effinghamlibrary.org or call the library at 342-2464 x3.
