The Effingham Fire Department will conduct our annual community Smoke Detector Program on June 16th, 17th, and 18th. Smoke detectors save lives, but only if they are working properly. It is the goal of the Effingham Fire Department to make sure that every resident is protected by a working smoke detector. Some residents, for whatever reason my not have the ability to check or maintain their detectors. The program is designed to help homeowners maintain their smoke detectors in their homes. Also, it will allow the firefighters an opportunity to interact with the residents of Effingham.
The Fire Department will go into a neighborhood within the city and walk door to door and ask the resident if they would like their smoke detector checked. If the resident accepts the service, the Fire Department will check the detector and make sure it is working correctly. If it is not working they will replace the battery or replace the detector if needed at no cost to the homeowner. The Fire Department will be in the area of Jaycee Ave on June 16th, 17th and 18th from 6:00 P. M until 8:00 P. M. The goal is to walk a different neighborhood within the city for three consecutive days in June, July and August. Again this is a free service to the homeowner and participation is not mandatory. Furthermore, if the resident is not home at the time of the visit a door hanger will be placed on the front door. This will give the resident the opportunity to contact the Effingham Fire Department for a return visit. All of the firefighters walking the neighborhood will be in unifor m and will provide proper identification. If you have any other concerns regarding fire safety feel free to ask the firefighters while they are in your neighborhood and they will gladly answer your questions.
