The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has started its 33rd year of service to the residents of our local communities. This program is sponsored by the LifeSpan Volunteer Program (LSVP) in conjunction with Coles County Council on Aging. All VITA volunteers are certified by IRS to provide basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing for low to moderate income individuals. Many of our volunteers have been with the VITA program several years.
The VITA Volunteers filed tax returns for 1,130 taxpayers ranging in age from 16 to 99 years old in 2016. They were able to get taxpayer refunds from the IRS of approximately $1.3 million -- and this money helps all of us by going back into our local economy. The majority of the taxpayers who had their taxes prepared at LifeSpan were repeat satisfied clients from previous years, but there were also several new clients!
If anyone is interested in having their taxes prepared by our VITA volunteers this year, be sure to take advantage of this FREE service by calling 639-5150. (Some restrictions apply.) This popular program is available to persons of all ages who need assistance e-filing basic tax returns. The service is by appointment only and the number of available appointments is limited by the number of hours our volunteer tax preparers are able to work so be sure to make your appointment as soon as possible!
If you would like to help us help more people by becoming a new volunteer, contact the LifeSpan Center LSVP coordinator and ask to have your name added to our growing list of volunteers. No previous is necessary and it is an excellent way to give back to YOUR community.
