A 50’s Sci-Fi Movie Marathon will take place at the Suzette Brumleve Memorial Effingham Public on Saturday, February 25 beginning at 11 a.m. in the Workman Room at the Library.

The first movie begins at 11 a.m. with “It Came From Outer Space”, (1953, G, 81 min.)

“It Came From Outer Space is one of a handful of science fiction films from the 1950s that plays as well today as it did on its original release.” A spaceship from another world crashes in the Arizona desert, and only an amateur stargazer and a schoolteacher suspect alien influence when the local townsfolk begin to act strange.

The second movie beginning at 1 p.m. is “Forbidden Planet” (1956, G, 98 min.)

“MGM's first big-budget science fiction film, Forbidden Planet, combined state-of-the-art special effects with a storyline based on Shakespeare's The Tempest.” The film tells the story of a starship crew that goes to investigate the silence of a planet's colony only to find two survivors and a deadly secret that one of them has.

The third and final movie of the day begins at 3 p.m. and is “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956, NR, 80 min.)

“Don Siegel's classic exercise in psychological science fiction has often been interpreted as a cautionary fable about the blacklisting hysteria of the McCarthy era. It can be read as a political metaphor or enjoyed as a fine low-budget suspense movie, and it works well either way.” This final movie is about a small-town doctor who learns that the population of his community is being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates.

No Registration Required.
