EHS, St. Anthony, T-town Boys Teams Headed To State Golf Tourney

Effingham High School is making its first ever appearance at the Class 2A State Golf Tournament after placing third at the Anna-Jonesboro Sectional Monday.

The Hearts' Brody Boehm, a junior, finished fifth with a career best 75. Also scoring for the Hearts were Max Seachrist, a senior, with 79 and Jude Traub and Leo Wyckoff, both sophomores, with an 80 and 86.

"Brody shot the best round of his career with a 75 to help lead us," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Max holed a 12-15 foot putt to send the team to State. We hung in there all day and it looked like it might get away, but we came through in the end."

Also competing for the Hearts were junior Cannon Bockhorn with an 87 and senior Rayden Schneider with a 93.

Benton won the team championship with a 312 followed by Charleston 319, Effingham 320, Highland 321, Anna-Jonesboro 324, Waterloo 330, Carterville 332, Metropolis Massac County 333, Columbia 334, Mattoon 336, Bethalto Civic Memorial 361, Staunton 370 and Waverly 371.

Charleston's Hudson Meister, a junior, was medalist with a 72.

The top three teams, Benton, Charleston and Effingham advance. Also the top 10 individuals not members of qualifying teams advance. Those included Darren Klein (Mascoutah), Will Stevens IV (Roxana), Kyle Chudd (Columbia), Eli Brown (Metropolis Massac County), Jacob Florek (Mascoutah), Andrew Bjornberg (Carterville), Carson Hagler (Carterville), Will Pullen (Mattoon), Braden Schrof (Highland) and Ayden Nealis (Olney, Richland County).

The Hearts will head to the Class 2A State Tournament Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.

 

Class 1A Zeigler-Royalton Sectional

Effingham St. Anthony won the championship of the Zeigler-Royalton Sectional with a 295 followed by Breese Mater Dei 309, Teutopolis 317, Red Bud 327, Carmi-White County 328, Alton Marquette 328, Glen Carbon Father McGivney 334, Waterloo Gibault Catholic 341, Waltonville 348, Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran 354, Campbell Hill Trico 355 and Chester 359.

The Bulldogs' Jack Swingler, a junior, was the medalist with a 70. Also scoring for St. Anthony were Dakota Flaig, a senior, with a 74, Maddux Clark, a junior with a 74 and Alec Hakman, a junior, with a 77. 

Other Bulldogs competing were Ryan Schmidt and Joey Trupiano, both seniors, with a 78 each.

The top three teams advance and those included St. Anthony, Breese Mater Dei and Teutopolis.

It is only the second time in school history, the Wooden Shoes have reached the State Tournament. T-town's Isaac Weber, a sophomore, led the way with a 77. Colin Habing, a senior, shot a 78 while Coen Pennington, a junior, finished with a 78 and Brody Thoele, a senior, had an 84. Also competing for the Wooden Shoes were Hayden Tebbe, a sophomore, with an 86 and Drew Hoene, a senior, with a 93.

Newton had two competitors. Gunner James, a senior, finished with an 85 and Jack James, a freshman, had an 86.

The top three teams along with the top 10 individuals, not members of those teams, advance to State.

Also heading to State as individuals are Sam Schwab (Litchfield), Ryan Suhre (Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran), Bronson Tippett (Eldorado), Carson Jones (Alton Marquette) 74, Bryce Cowdry (Raymond Lincolnwood), Tucker Maguire (Litchfield) Ethan Kessler (McLeansboro Hamilton County), Aidan Willi (Carmi-White County), Bradley Goodwin (Glen Carbon Father McGivney) and Henry Willenborg (Glen Carbon Father McGivney).

St. Anthony and Teutopolis will be competing at the Class 1A State Tournament Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 at Weibring Golf Club in Normal.

 

Class 1A Quincy Notre Dame Sectional

Two Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg high school players competed in the Quincy Notre Dame Sectional Monday.

Rylan Rincker, a senior, finished with an 83 while Jacob Vonderheide, a sophomore, had a 98. Neither advanced to State.

Quincy Notre Dame won the team title followed by Carthage Illini West and Delavon. Quincy's Olliver Hendrian, a sophomore, was medalist with a 70.
