Three Area Girls Advance To Class 1A State Golf Tourney

Mount Carmel won the team championship with a 315 total followed by Massac County 338, Salem 347, Effingham 372, Sullivan 373, Effingham St. Anthony 375, Harrisburg 385, Downs Tri-Valley 387, Champaign St. Thomas More 403, Monticello 407, Charleston 422 and Tuscola 453.
Mount Carmel's Emily Gottman, a junior, was medalist with a 74, four strokes better than the second place golfer.
Effingham St. Anthony's Addie Krouse, a junior, finished with 88 to advance to State. She was tied for 10th with four other golfers.
Also heading to State are Effingham's Makenna Mayhood, a sophomore, who scored an 89, tying one other golfer for 11th place. Teutopolis' Brileigh Bloemer, a sophomore, advanced with a 90. She was tied with one other golfer for 12th place.
The top three teams advance to State and those included Mount Carmel, Massac County and Salem. Effingham just missed in fourth place.
The top 10 golfers, not members of qualifying teams, also advance. Other's advancing were Emma Hall (Downs Tri-Valley) 85, Frankie Nicholes (Harrisburg) 86, Ashley Wells (St. Thomas More) 86, Shaelyn Ellis (Sullivan) 87, Sarah Mills (Clinton) 88, Madison Barnes (Olympia) 89 and Josie Welch (Johnston City) 90.
"My girls played their last team round of golf yesterday," said St. Anthony Coach Morgan Briggerman. "We had an awesome season and grew a lot during our time together, We are sad to lose our senior, Sydney Kibler, but we are very hopeful for all that next year will hold.
"We did not make the team cut for State but we had one individual make it through. Addie shot an 88. Although it was not a good round for her, we are hopeful that she will turn it around at State. The course we played was very difficult, so I am proud of the girls for the way they finished. We are also glad that another two of the area's individuals advanced to State as well with Makenna and Brileigh."
Other Effingham golfers competing were Ella Tuman 93, Natalie Armstrong 94, Elena Niebrugge 96, Grace Harper 96 and Mya Harvey 111.
St. Anthony golfers were Gianna Frisbie 94, Brooklyn Phillips 96, Mia Schwing 97, Sydney Kibler 99 and Nora Trupiano 100.
Other Teutopolis golfers were Halle Bushue 93 and Olivia Wermert 107.
North Clay's Kennedy Jones, a sophomore, finished with a 102.
"Congratulations to sophomore Kennedy Jones who became the first female golfer in North Clay school history to advance to the IHSA Sectional round," said North Clay athletic director Richard Grubaugh.
The State Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Red Tail Golf Course in Decatur.
