Bulldogs, Wooden Shoes, Hatchets Advance In 1A Boys Golf Regional

Members of the St. Anthony's golf team winning the Class 1A McLeansboro Regional were, left to right, Jack Swingler, Charlie Wegman, Lane Ludwig, Preston Phillips, Joey Trupiano, Dakota Flaig, Ryan Schmidt, Alec Hakman and Coach Phil Zaccari.

Effingham St. Anthony claimed the championship of the Class 1A McLeansboro Hamilton County Boys Golf Regional Wednesday while Teutopolis finished second. Both squads, along with third place Hamilton County, advance to the Waterloo Gibault Catholic Sectional at Acorns Golf Links Monday.

The Bulldogs finished with a 283 total, 37 strokes ahead of second place Teutopolis with 320 and 47 ahead of third place Hamilton County with 330. The top three were followed by Carmi-White 337, Newton 350, Oblong 355, Flora 356, Altamont 368, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield 376, Edwards County (Albion) 378 and Fairfield 386.

The Bulldogs swept the top three spots. Dakota Flaig, a junior, was medalist for the regional with a 70. Joey Trupiano, also a junior, finished second, with a 70 and Preston Phillips, a senior, took third with a 71. Finishing out the scoring for the Bulldogs was Lane Ludwig, a senior, in fifth place with a 72.

Other golfers competing for St. Anthony were senior Charlie Wegman seventh with a 75 and junior Ryan Schmidt 13th with an 80.

T-town's Coen Pennington, a sophomore, finished fourth with a 72. Also scoring for the Shoes were Isaac Weber 11th with an 80, Ethan Thoele 16th with an 83 and Hayden Jansen 23rd with an 85. Others competing were Brody Thoele 27th with an 87 and Kole Ohnesorge 33rd with an 89.

The top three teams advance while the top 10 individuals, not members of qualiying teams, also advance to sectional action

Newton's Grant Fulton, a junior, finished 10th with a 79 and teammate Michael Kennedy, a sophomore, finished 14th with an 82. Both advance to the sectional as individuals. Other Newton players competing were Gunner James 32nd with an 89, Evan Johnson 54th with a 100 and Ajay McCann 65th with a 119.

Other individuals advancing were Anden Atwood (Cisne) 76, Avery Gardner (Fairfield) 78, Maxon O'Daniel (Carmi-White County) 80, Aidan Willis (Carmi-White County) 83, Riley Blank (Oblong), Cayden Holloman (Carmi-White County 84, Nolan Prather (NCOE) 84 and Ollie Collins (Flora) 84.

Altamont and North Clay (Louisville) also had golfers competing.

Altamont players were Gavin Flack 29th with an 88, Daniel McCammon 39th with a 92, Kaiden Wolff 44th with a 94, Tyler Ruffner 47th with a 94, Hayden Summers 55th with a 100 and Justin Kollmann 57th with a 106.

North Clay players were Riley Poe 37th with a 90 and Jacob Arnold 60th with a 111.

 

Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg captured second place in the Decatur St. Teresa Regional and will be advancing as a team.

LeRoy won the team title with 359 followed by Windsor/Stew-Stras 368, North Mac 373, Macon Meridian 376, Shelbyville 381, Sullivan 386, Auburn 394, Springfield Lutheran 394, Okaw Valley 395, Blue Ridge 396.Moweaqua 401, Pana 409 and Decatur St.. Teresa 444.

Sullivan's Brett Bushur, a senior, was medalist with a 79.

Scoring for Windsor/Stew-Stras were junior Rylan Rincker 10th with 90, senior Briar Smith 12th with 92, senior Clayton Carey 16th with 93 and freshman Jacob Vonderheide 17th with 93. Also competing for the Hatchets were sophomore Ross McCormick 27th with 96 and senior Nathaniel Gracey 33rd with 98.

The Hatchets will now head to the Auburn Sectional at Edgewood Golf Club Monday, October 2.
