Effingham High School graduate Jason Owen has gone on to a highly successful career as a college golf coach. Owen is head coach and director of golf at California State University-Monterey Bay.
After winning the national championship in 2011, Owen's Otter squad recently completed this season by reaching the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals. Monterey Bay lost to Nova Southeastern 3-2 in match play. Nova Southeastern was the defending national champion, so the match was a battle between the last two national titleholders.
Owen is the son of Bruce and Debbie Owen, both retired educators in this area. He said their guidance has helped him as a coach. The team's focus is on getting their education addressed, and then work on their golf.
Owen is still playing golf, although he said not as much as he'd like. He also still plays competitively, and is competing this week for a shot at making the field for the PGA Championships later this year.
