St. A Boys, Girls Place First In Golf Invites; Newton Wins Season Opener

Effingham St. Anthony captured first place at the Decatur St. Teresa Boys Golf Invitational Tuesday

Five St. Anthony players finished in the top 10. Dakota Flaig was medalist with a 37-37 -- 74. Lane Ludwig finished sixth with a 38-38 -- 76 while Charlie Wegman was seventh with a 37-40 --77, Joey Trupiano eighth with a 40-41 -- 81 and Preston Phillips 10th with an 40-42 -- 82. Ryan Schmidt finished out the Bulldogs with an 40-45 -- 85.

The Bulldogs finished with a 308 total to win the championship. They were followed by Bloomington Central Catholic 314, Monticello 324, Tri-Valley 365, Maroa-Forsyth 395 and Clinton 371. Decatur St. Teresa and Decatur LSA did not have enough players for a team score.

Bloomington Central Catholic's Luke Allen was second with a 75 followed by Maddux Quick (Monticello) 75, Andrew Neef (Monticello) 76, Conner Campbell (BCC) 76 and Patrick Costigan (BCC) in ninth place with an 81.

St. Anthony will be back in action Thursday at the Rend Lake Invitational.

The Bulldogs finished eighth in the junior varsity invitational.

Pleasant Valley won with 301 followed by Mahomet-Seymour 303, Wheaton Academy 305, East Peoria 320, Normal U-High 324, Bloomington 328, Mattoon 328, Rockton Hononegah 332, Metamora 334, Byron 335, Mount Zion 336, Peoria Notre Dame 343, Champaign Central 345, Limestone 347, Boylan 349, Assumption 350, Macomb 354, Lincoln 371 and Richwoods 375.

Mahomet-Seymours' Reis Claybrook was first with a 69 followed by teammate Leif Olson with a 70. East Peoria took the next two spots as Connor Watson and Nicholas Unes both finished with a 71. Wheaton Academy's Freddie Chan was fifth with a 71.

Scoring for St. Anthony were Jack Swingler 37-38 -- 75, Alec Hakman 46-36 -- 82, Maddux Clark 40-42 -- 82 and Ethan Karolewicz 43-43 -- 86. Drake Brown had a 47-48 -- 95 and Luke Anderson 44-53 -- 97.

 

Teutopoils Invitational

Effingham St. Anthony claimed first place in the Teutopolis Girls Golf Invitational Tuesday. The event ended just shy of completing 18 holes as the sun was setting.

The Bulldogs had a team total of 224, sweeping the top four individual spots. Sydney Kibler was medalist with a 51 while Addison Krouse took second with a 56. Alilson Geen third with a 58 and Mia Schwing fourth with a 59.

Effingham placed second with a 258 total while Teutopolis was third with a 277.

Scoring for the Hearts were Elena Niebrugge 60, Ella Tuman 61, Makenna Mayhood 66 and Natalie Armstrong 68.

Non-counters for the Hearts were Grace Harper 71 and Allison Kroenlein 78,

t-town's Halle Bushue carded a 64.

 

At Casey

Newton High School opened its boys golf season with a first place finish against three other teams Tuesday.

The Eagles tallied a 171 team total to beat Paris 174, Casey-Westfield 183 and Olney 205. North Clay had two players competing.

Newton's Michael Kennedy and Paris' Drake Bartos were co-medalists with a 39 each.

Also scoring for the Eagles were Gunner James, who claimed third place with a 40, Grant Fulton 44 and Evan Johnson 48.
