The St. Anthony Bulldogs have won the Boys 1A State Golf Championship, and Joey Trupiano of the Bulldogs won the Class 1A Individual Championship.

St. Anthony finished the first day with a 321 team total, a score Coach Phil Zaccari said they were not satisfied with, but a number that still left them in second place, nine shots behind Chicago Latin School.

A team chat following Friday's round seemed to provide a spark. St. Anthony finished with a 297 team score on Saturday, and that propelled them to a 618 two-day total and the state title by a five-stroke margin over Latin.

As for Trupiano, he shot rounds of 75-73=148, and then won on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to claim the 1A individual championship. Trupiano is the sophomore son of Joey and Nikki Trupiano.

Our Greg Sapp spoke with Trupiano Sunday about the accomplishment..

As far as the rest of the Bulldogs crew, here are the scores: freshman Coen Pennington tied for 11th with 81-74=155; senior Jonathan Willenborg tied for 16th with 84-73=157; junior Lane Ludwig tied for 25th with 81-77=158; senior Michael Martelli finished 64th with 87-83=170; and junior Preston Phillips finished tied for 71st with 84-90=174.

The team title is the fifth state championship for St. Anthony's boys golf.
