St. A Boys Win Two Golf Titles During Weekend; EHS Girls Second In Tourney

Effingham St. Anthony won, not one, but two boys golf invitationals during the weekend.

The Bulldogs captured the Charleston Invitational Friday with 299. The Bulldogs were followed by Mattoon 310, Charleston Red 326, Mount Zion 329, Arcola 334, St. Anthony Junior Varsity 336, Rantoul 356, Champaign St. Thomas More 362, Paris 365, Effingham 376, Sullivan 377, Danville 387 and Charleston Gold 412.

St. Anthony's Coen Pennington was medalist with a 36-35 -- 71 followed by Stuart Druid (Mattoon) 71, Alex Nealis (Olney) 72, Ayden Nealis (Olney) 74, Jonathan Willenborg (St. Anthony) 37-38 -- 75, Braden Kauffmann (Arcola) 75, Michael Martelli (St. Anthony) 38-37 -- 75, Lane Ludwig (St. Anthony) 37-41 -- 78, Andrew Kuykendahl (Charleston) 78 and Will Pullen (Mattoon) 79.

Others competing for St. Anthony were Preston Philips 42-42 -- 84 and Joey Trupiano 39-46 -- 85.

In Saturday's Centralia Four-Ball Invitational at Greenview Golf Course, St. Anthony won with a 211 followed by Highland 214, Alton 220, Salem 224, Nashville 237, Centralia 239, Marion 254, Trenton Wesclin 262, Mount Vernon 267 and Carbondale 280.

Highland's Emig-Emig were first with a 67 followed by Ottwell-Siatos (Alton) 68, Joey Trupiano-Coen Pennington (St. Anthony) 31-37 -- 68, Lane Ludwig-Preston Phillips (St. Anthony) 36-35 -- 71 and Stroud-Lockhart (Salem) 71 in the top five.

Also competing for the Bulldogs were Jonathan Willenborg-Michael Martelli 35-37 -- 72.

 

 At Champaign

Effingham claimed second place out of nine teams at the John Macek Memorial Girls Golf Tournament at the University of Illinois Blue Course Saturday.

Mattoon edged the Hearts for the championship. The Green Wave tallied 342 while Effingham had 343. The top two were followed by Normal Community 347, Teutopolis 387, Belleville West 392, Breese Central 406, Normal West 455 and Lincoln 462.

Medalist was Mattoon's Blair Powers with a 71. Effingham's Mara Kirk was second with a 78. Also scoring for the Hearts were Elena Niebrugge ninth with an 87, Ella Niebrugge 10th with an 87 and Ella Tuman 14th with a 91. Other EHS girls competing were Marissa Allie 15th with a 92 and Makenna Maywood 21st with a 95.

Competing for Teutopolis were Abigail Wortman 24th with a 96, Alaina Helmink 26th with a 97, Halle Bushue 27th with a 97, Brileigh Bloemer 28th with a 97, Mollie Koester 40th with a 116 and Josie Deters 45th with a 123.

 

At Casey

Effingham nabbed a boys win over host Casey-Westfield, 172-214.

The Hearts' Colby Haynes tallied a 39 for medalist honors. Also scoring for the Hearts were Cannon Bockhorn 43, Brody Boehm 45 and Rayden Schneider 45. David Splechter had a 48 and Evan Pryor a 54.

Scoring for Casey-Westfield were Yates 47, Maulding 49, Morrison 59 and Hall 59. Others were Haenig 59, Morgan 63 and Mayhall 67.

EHS junior varsity scores were Blayne Pals 52, Preston Siner 52, Ross Schaefer 53, Kaden Field 54, KC Kuhlman 56 and Gunnar Heil 67.
