Bulldogs Second At John Macek Golf Invitational; Altamont Beats Sandoval

CHAMPAIGN -- Effingham St. Anthony tied with Mattoon for the championship of the John Macek Golf Invitational Monday at the University of Illinois Orange Course. Mattoon claimed first place with the sixth score breaking the tie.

The top two scored a 329 followed by Monticello 332, Sullivan 336, Champaign Central 342, Charleston 342, Judah Christian 370, Champaign Centennial 377, Effingham 379, Champaign St. Thomas More 392, Urbana 392, Taylorville 392, Bismarck-Henning 402 and Danville 421.

Central's Wade Schacht was medalist with a 75. St. Anthony's Michael Martellli finished fifth with a 40-40 -- 80, Lane Ludwig was ninth with a 41-40 -- 81, Charlie Wegman 12th with a 43-41 -- 84 and Jonathan Willenborg was 14th with a 47-37 -- 84. Non-counters were Thomas Chojnicki 41-45 -- 86 and Aidan Tegeler 47-48 -- 95.

Scoring for the Hearts were Colby Haynes with an 86, Ethan Ritz with a 95 and Ryker Schneider and Nick Burgess with a 99 each. David Splechter had a 100 and Jett Volpi a 110.

At Sandoval

Altamont traveled to Sandoval and claimed a 149-190 victory Monday.

Scoring for the Indians were Avery Jahraus 33, Kevin Hall 35, Tyler Stonecipher 36 and Max Runge 45. Non-counters were Daniel McCammon 48 and Gavyn Smith 52.

Scoring for Sandoval were Keaton Wilkerson 41, Tristan Green 45, Wyatt Hassell 51 and Owen Landreth 53. Non-counter was Quentin Heinzman 59.

Girls scoring were Altamont's Madison Splechter with a 49 and Sandoval's Morgan Sligar with a 72.

Altamont junior varsity scoring were Zeke Rippetoe 44, Alec Jahraus 51, A.J. Kopplin 58, Will Schultz 58 and Justin Brummer 61.

Altamont now has a 2-0 record and Sandoval dropped to 0-3.

"The course was in good shapr for having all the rain last Saturday," said Altamont Coach Jim Strange. "It started off hot but cooled down quick with a storm brewing just southwest of Sandoval. The course and coaches put on an excellent event and we thank them very much.

"The team score was our lowest this year with our three top golfers playing their best. I am very proud of our entire team, my four, five and six boys shot their averages allowing us to post the low score. Madison Splechter played her best round of this season, way to go."

Altamont is back in action Thursday at Vandalia at 4 p.m.
